Regardless of his personality type, regardless of his race, regardless of his financial status there are really only TWO different types of men that exist; dominant and submissive. If you want to pull your man towards his best life and push him to be on his best behavior at all times, all you have to do is recognize which type of man you have and then train him.

The Dominant Man

The dominant man is recognized by his confidence in his abilities and the way he makes decisions without needing a consensus. He trusts his own judgment and expects you to respect and trust him too. To motivate this man to be his best, take good care of you and his empire you need to:

· Consistently adore him

· Pamper him

· Respect and support his decisions

· Remind him that he is a King

· Make his home his paradise

· Stay sexy and eager to please

· Feed him

· Be his biggest cheerleader

The dominant man will appreciate a woman who is submissive and plays a role that completely caters to his needs and wants in life. He will probably have a big bark, yelling out orders and throwing his weight around but he does still love you. He exercises his authority aggressively both in the office and at home and it makes him feel like more of a man to have his lady looking sexy and consistently ready to please, without an attitude or objection.

The Submissive Man

The submissive man is recognized by his constant need for reassurance. He needs your approval before he does anything and he adores affection and being petted. He doesn’t really know how to be dominant and he doesn’t want to be. He needs a woman to make him be a better man by:

· Making him earn home cooked meals

· Rationing out sex as a reward for good behavior

The submissive man will appreciate a woman who treats him like a dog because this delights him. Somewhere along the line he was trained to believe that this behavior is indicative of a real woman. He loves a woman with an attitude and would reject any woman who adores him. He has no clue how to be a better man on his own so he needs your aggressive guidance and fully appreciates it.

Q: I finally did it. I broke up with him. when do you finally stop missing him? I'm kind of there already, I just hate feeling like he was right about everything and that I really am "impossible to love" and that he was the only guy was the one who got away. Before we broke up, or when I was being "difficult" or acting like a "cunt" those were the things he'd say. So why do I miss him? My mom thinks I'm slow or retarded or something.

A: You miss him because what you had with him was your only representation of love. You yearn for those brief moments where you felt like he loved you. You remember that feeling...you want it again. He held his respect for you over your head like a carrot in a horse race for many years and you never could get it. He fed off of you wanting his approval and for some reason you fed into desiring his approval and proving to yourself that you didn't really deserve it or would ever get it.

You miss him because you have not yet met his replacement. You will continue missing him until you do. It's okay to miss him. He is a part of your life, a part of your story. Allow yourself that. Cry if you want to. Masterbate to the memories if you want to. It's all okay because it's how you feel. Just don't go back to him unless you want to stop complaining about how he treats you. If you go back, that means you love it!

One day, you'll meet a much tighter dude and you'll laugh at being all messed up because of your ex. The rest of the country is catching up to what the South has already known- full figured women are the best thing walking. Forget about the size 2 waifs who continue to grace the covers of magazines causing millions of women who don’t fit that mold to feel as though they could not live up to the nation’s standard of beauty.

With the recent celebration surrounding Beyonce’s debut on the April 2009 cover of Vogue magazine, the cover title proudly boasting ‘Real Women Have Curves’, more and more women are dusting off their booty shorts and mini skirts as they declare to the world and everyone in it “I am bold and beautiful because I am who I am!

But you’ll never have to explain that concept to the fellas south of the Mason Dixon. We, the righteous, progressive brothers and sisters down in the dirty dirty already knew that.

We like our women nice and juicy, cornbread fed with an attitude to boot. No longer do we have to conform to an image of beauty spoon fed to us by a select few of nerdy wannabe trendsetters in New York. We take pride in who we are, where we’re from and what we look like when we rock the gear that makes us feel good.

There’s a whole lotta lovin’ for the lovely ladies whose confidence is not defined by their waist size. Whatever the scale says, whatever the dress size, however the jeans fit, we now know that it isn’t the size that dictates our happiness and beauty- it’s the radiance that eminates from inside.

Although an Alphanista and an HMW (High Maintenance Woman) may bear remarkable similarities in appearance due to their immaculate flair for style and unflinching flock of followers, the buck stops there. When it comes to dealing with the various intricacies of life the two could not be more different in their approaches.

Friendships

In friendships, the HMW requires devotion and attention. She must be complimented by her friends on every occasion and she seeks their approval when making decisions for her life, although she would never admit to it. She is fickle when it comes to relationships with women. If one of her so called friends does not consistently adore her, she will walk away without even so much as a goodbye, turning to others who will readily give her the admiration that she craves.

Although the Alphanista is usually the most dominant of her circle of friends, she leads in a covert way that is not demanding and allows those around her to believe that they are actually calling the shots. The Alphanista is turned off by women who cling to her every word and mimic her every move. She is supercharged most by fellowshipping with other Alphanistas whose inclination to make their unique mark on the world pushes her to want more and do more.

Business

In business relationships, the HMW is a stickler for details. She is a very savvy business woman because she will cover all of the bases and is sure to get all of the facts before she makes a decision.

The Alphanista has an innate business instinct that she follows without fail. She knows where she is going and even when she is unsure of the steps necessary to get there, she trusts herself to make the best decisions for her life and career and is fueled by her independence. She doesn’t have to check with anyone before making a business move, she is confident enough to deal with any praise or repercussions that may be the result of her efforts.

Style

The HMW is a slave to fashion trends. She is usually spotted on the front row of every fashion show or buying out all of the high end fashion magazines to keep pace with the changing times. She would never wear last season’s handbag or be caught dead breaking any of the many faux paus of style. You will always be impressed by the HMW when you see her at an event- and you should- she takes great effort to maintain her perfection.

The Alphanista usually sports a more classic looks than those regurgitating the fair weather style of the season. She laughs at the trend setters and their followers because she knows that trends are fleeting and require too much work to maintain. She often has a signature accessory like a scarf, perfume or pair of sunglasses which becomes well known as her trademark and is admired and copied by those wishing to be more like her.

Love

When it comes to love and romance, the HMW can snag any man who is eager to feed her addiction to praise and approval. She is often lucky at love due to the fact that there are many men who cling to women who have the appearance of success. In relationships, the HMW is clearly the dominant force, however, she leads by making demands and punishing those who are unable to meet them. Submissive men are a good match for the HMW.

So you just upgraded your cell phone plan by adding unlimited text messaging. No more rationing out your texts and getting frustrated when you can’t text back. You now have instant access to everyone you know at any time of the day or night. Don’t go buckwild and think you can do whatever you want to do. Just like with everything else, rules do apply. Slow down, pay attention, and take heed to the following do's and don'ts of text messaging.

Do remember the three Gs if you’re trying to make your special someone feel cherished. Send good morning, good night and good Luck texts when appropriate to keep the love flowing. Maybe if Kanye’s ex had listened to this advice instead of being so Dr. Evil, his album would have been called "808’s & Sexcapades.

"Don’t spam your friends with updates from your daily escapades. That’s why Twitter was invented. Sign up for Twitter, and amuse your followers with eye catching updates like “headed to the store."

Do use Quick Texts. On my way. Running Late. What’s Up? Call me. Too busy to call or too lazy to type out 150 characters? Quick Texts are saved messages conveniently stored in your phone and take a minute to access. They’re in there for a reason. Use them.

Don’t send a three-page text asking for a hookup if you’re creeping with the next woman’s man. Your name may end up in a high profile police report like the reluctant, now-intimate muse reported by TMZ to be behind the Chris Brown/Rihanna fight of the century. Everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame; make sure it’s for something good, okay?

Do remember to send a text message to everyone in your phone when you change your number or else you’ll be sent straight to voicemail when you try to reach out to your friends. No one answers numbers they don’t recognize.

Don’t forget to include LOL when you’re making a joke via text. Sarcasm doesn’t go over well in text messages.

Do send mass text messages for the holidays. Even though it’s impersonal and sometimes annoying, you don’t have time to call 100 people to say Happy New Year. At least they’ll smile knowing you thought enough of them to click their name.

Don’t dismiss someone because they misspell a word in a text. It’s text messaging, not a college entrance essay. Lighten up. And yes ... texted is a real word.

Do vote for your favorite on "American Idol." They need your support!

Don’t send anything that you don’t want other people to read. When the relationship goes sour, sometimes dirty tricks surface, and your words may become evidence against you in myriad of ways.

Do be extra mindful when replying to your boss. Don't slip up and think you're texting to one of your homies, or - even worse - a potential love interest. Those are wires you do not want to get crossed!

Don’t let your texts be your main method of communication with a person of interest. If you meet someone you like, don’t text them right away. Call first. Have a real conversation. Use text messages for the nasty afterthoughts.

Do use codewords if you’re doing undercover deeds. Replace sex with ice cream or ask “Did you let the dog out?” if you want to know if it’s okay for you to come over.

Don’t send a text message like, “I love you," freak out when you don’t get a response and then, five minutes later, send a follow-up text saying, “Sorry, I texted the wrong person.” If you said it and you meant it, don’t back down. Life is so much spicier this way!

If you’re up for a challenge, your relationship with an Alphanista will be the most frustrating, yet exhilarating ride that you’ve ever experienced- that is, if you know how to navigate the rocky terrain.

Sometimes I meet men who have so much potential but they just don’t get it. With a free spirit like me, you have to operate differently. The same rules that you’ll use with the average woman who uses her skills in the kitchen or the bedroom to snag her man won’t work with me.

Although there will never be a definitive guide to taming an Alphanista, (because she can not be tamed) following these suggestions will get you closer to your goal- the rest is up to God.

Be Consistent
You have to be consistent, mainly because I’m not. My preferences or taste buds can shift whenever the wind blows and I am energized by the complete freedom to change my mind on a whim. It’s challenging enough to wake up and decide what I want out of life “today” so I need a man who means what he says and does what he promises to do, day in and day out. Since most people alter their opinions to match mine, a man who is consistent with his preferences, expectations and actions provides the kind of structure that translates erotically.

Say Yes
You don’t say “no” when I see something pretty because you don’t have to. Your finances are not shaken by the state of the economy because your resources are long and strong. Even if you do lose out on a business venture, you have 5 more right behind it that are flourishing. You believe I deserve the best that life has to offer and you know it’s your responsibility to give it to me. I’m your fantasy woman and you’re not about to spoil your dream come true by not being able to give me my heart’s desires. There’s nothing that delights you more than watching my eyes twinkle as I give you a kiss after trying on one of your sparkly gifts or receiving a phone call from a business connection that you supplied. Thank you!

Correct Me
Yes, I do run shit in most situations and it is completely within my reach to do so elegantly but spending so much time teaching and molding others can take a toll on the psyche of an Alphanista. Don’t abuse this gift but I want to give you the secret; I likebeing taught and corrected by my man. If you can teach me something that will add to the success of my business endeavors I will definitely keep you around longer. And…every once in while, I need to be reminded that I am a mere mortal. An intentional, open handed smack to my rump will revitalize me and I will thank you for it.

Feed Me
I like to eat. You bring the food. That’s your job every single day. Show up to my place empty handed and that proves you don’t give a damn about me or my well-being. Goodbye.

Let It Slide
Sometimes the line between work and play can be blurred, at least in my mind. I have to be the hard ass to get things done and sometimes I carry that attitude home with me. I apologize in advance but you will just have to learn to deal with it. Don’t fight me on it. Let me rant and rave and try to strong arm you into doing the dishes. Instead of overanalyzing my requests- Do the dishes. It doesn’t take away from your role as my man. When I come down off of my power trip, I’ll realize what I’ve done and you’ll benefit from an apology you’ll never forget.

Let Me Love You
Yes, I have a whole list of people whose main desire is to please me but I have a sweet side too. I want to spoil you and pamper you and be your trophy too. I want you to brag to your friends about how well I take care of you and how much I add to your success. Don’t fight me when I want to do something nice for you. You deserve it just as much as I do. Let me take you on a trip and buy you something nice. Let me sweep you off your feet. Allow me to use my powers for good in appreciation for the wonderful man that you are. Let me love you in all of the extravagant, calculated ways that I know how because…I want to. Isn’t it your job to give me what I want? Uh huh…That’s right.

The Alpha female stands out by nature and is uncomfortable conforming to the standards set by society that dictate her actions, growth and level of success. Her sense of individuality is invigorating and she won’t allow another woman (or group of women) to stand before her as judge and jury to determine if she is worthy of being a member of their sisterhood. The Alpha female knows that she doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone.

This may be why few Alpha females ever opt to experience the sisterhood of sororities. However, the cunning and strategic Alpha female will rise above her insecurity about being perceived as one of the crowd and recognize the benefits that her eloquence and skill would add to the sisterhood as well as the importance of connecting with women on a business and social level.

Social connections lead to increased business opportunities.
“People want to work with people they like,” one business leader told me after I expressed resistance to hanging out with him and his colleagues at a happy hour. But, after interviewing women who have successfully navigated the throes of office politics and climbed the ranks at corporations they all remind me that friendships trump skill in major business developments. The more friendships you have as you connect with a national organization that has a reputation for stellar members, the more women you know will support your efforts to achieve your dreams which reflect positively on the sorority.

Developing the ability to work well with other women is a major factor in success.
By joining a sisterhood you will learn that once you’re in, you’re in and there is no walking away from challenges that present themselves. You will learn by trial and error how to allow others to lead, how to channel your emotional impulses effectively in a group full of emotional women and how to support a common goal that may not directly impact your own. This skill is immensely valuable if you honor the principle of sowing and reaping. Women who work well with women enjoy a more elevated level of success than those who won’t recognize the common ground in relationships with other women.

Sorority chapters are a great place to hone your leadership skills.
If you are an Alpha female on the rise, every endeavor that you undertake is an opportunity to put your ever-evolving skill set into practice. An Alpha female who joins a sorority takes advantage of the opportunity to hone her skills as a leader. Of course the Alpha female will become the chapter president and initiate new policies and outreaches; that is precisely why sororities seek out these type of women who will one day move on to owning and operating their own corporations or growing their individual brand name into a multi-million dollar success.

As you meet, connect and come to respect other women who mirror your own level of class, drive and endurance you will experience an increased appreciation for life as you begin to love yourself even more.

My blog is a vibrant representation of the hope of our people as I continue to study and imitate the paths of the brilliantly successful people who have walked before me. During the beginning of my career as a journalist I posted articles to my blog that I had to volunteer to write such as artist bios and marketing materials for people who could not or would not pay me due to my lack of experience. As I gained momentum and experience as a journalist I had to trek across three states, sleep in my car, hostels and shelters and even go hungry most days just to be able to have the freedom enough to seek bigger opportunities.

I am hungry. I am ambitious. I am talented. I am driven. I am now a graduate student studying to become a Marriage/Family/Couples Counselor. I use my knowledge of psychology to help others heal their relationship issues. I also host a radio talk show on my campus radio station that is centered around developing healthy relationships in all areas of your life. My guests have given advice about how to maintain work relationships, how Black men view the newly elected President as well as conversations surrounding issues that are important to the everyday development of our people. I produce, host and engineer each show myself. I also own and manage several other blogs and contribute to many more.

My presence at this event will inspire the legends of our time to reflect on the characteristics that they developed which led to their stellar contributions to our society. My hope during this conference is to meet, greet and catalogue the secrets, habits and attitudes of our role models and share them with my readers so that they too, will be able to reach and attain any and every goal they can imagine.

While watching a television biography about the union of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, I was amazed to learn that the entire time Schwarzenegger was single he envisioned marrying someone from a political family, well connected or perhaps even royalty. He saw himself as an influential public figure with an amazingly successful woman by his side. Unknown to us and maybe even unknown to him, as he toiled away as a construction worker, he was pining after a vision for his life that he would one day enjoy.

How many Alpha women in the world have fantasized about meeting a wickedly successful and brilliant man only to share their fantasy with a friend who scoffs at them? You know what you want and it’s not a man you’ll meet on every street corner or at the club on First Fridays.

My greatest romantic fantasy involves a man who will partner with me to help many others achieve success. He has a diverse investment portfolio and is a man of integrity. His creativity blows minds, his communication skills are unmatched and his heart is like gold. He is just like me in so many ways, yet he complements my gifts and talents with talents that are unique to him. He is not a ‘company man.’ If he even chooses to work for a company, he is the boss. He is a public figure and we work together to use our influence to uplift and empower millions.

My friends often smile at me when I’m pouring my heart out about my desires. They pat my leg and shake their heads wondering if I’ll remain single for the rest of my life while still holding on to this dream. Sometimes I wonder too, but that still doesn’t deter me from believing in this awesome business/intimate partner.

I truly believe that the type of man you desire is a direct reflection of the lifestyle you will live. You see yourself smiling proudly as he accepts his awards and you giggle at the thought of him removing the zipper of your ballroom gown with his teeth after a glamorous evening at one of your philanthropic events.

Prepare for that union by becoming as successful as you can. Become the best woman you can be according to your own imagination and enjoy your single life as you build yourself into someone you and your family will be proud of. You want to be an asset to his life just as much as he will be to yours. Ignore everyone who says you want too much, or men like that don’t date women who come from the neighborhood you were raised in.

Your unquenchable desire is like a shining light beckoning you to prepare for your future. Stand tall, become the woman you see standing beside the man you desire. You ARE worthy and you will have it, if you do not break down and decide that you aren’t worthy of what your heart is telling you that you deserve.

Germany's award-winning musician, DonFranko Dagostino, moved the crowd with his enchanting vocals in celebration of the grand opening of "Club O", Overstock.com's emergence into the Second Life virtual market place.

Founded in 1997, Overstock.com pioneered the online sale of surplus merchandise. Rivaled by popular websites like Amazon.com and Ebay, Overstock.com's presence in Second Life indicates an aggressive marketing strategy aimed toward Second Life residents who, through the existing virtual market-place, have embraced the emergence of the on-line shopping experience.

Since Overstock.com doesn't have a RL storeroom, the creation of Club O is a monumental milestone for the internet based sales pioneer. Inside Club O, you will notice that the clean red and white decor complements the RL website's theme. You will also find that the different categories of items for purchase on the website are represented on individual showcases inside the store. One click on any featured item and you are directed to the section of Overstock.com that displays similar items.

Red and white kiosks adorned with a big red 'O' line the walls of the store. Each kiosk can be touched to gather information about contests, freebie give-aways as well as links to join the Club O group or be directed to the RL website.

Promoters stop by the store three times a day to surprise shoppers with unique gifts purchased from other SL businesses. If a promoter is not available at the time of your visit, simply leave a notecard in the suggestion box and your name will be entered to win one of the high-end SL gifts.

Original artwork by SL artists lend an artsy vibe to the atmosphere. Two pieces of vibrant artwork by SL artists Elorien Ayres and Ro Gastel were purchased at a charity auction for Autism and are prominently displayed on both sides of the stage.

Thousands of hopeful entrepreneurs have achieved their status as small-business owners as a result of the ever-growing Second Life market place. Grab a friend, a bag of popcorn and be sure to take cover. The BBC Film Network has invaded Second Life with an arsenal of film shorts by new British filmmakers.

Depo Consulting, a virtual brand specialist, has partnered with BBC Film Network to showcase an award-winning and eclectic program of short films by up and coming British filmmakers. The short films, which range from 1 to 4 minutes in length, are being broadcast at a virtual cinema in Second Life.

"Film Network is constantly trying to develop new ways of screening film and Second Life presents an opportunity to explore the potential of virtual worlds and engage with a new audience," said Claire Cook, Senior Producer, BBC Film Network.

The theatre's ample seating and high resolution screen afford the virtual movie watcher an optimal experience while enjoying the animation, comedies or documentaries being presented by The Film Network.

"With this space you have the ability to combine the immediacy and convenience of the Internet, with thesocial experience of actually visiting a cinema," said depo CEO and creative director Peter Dunkley.

The interactive site also allows visitors to rate and comment on the films in addition to providing the featured filmmakers the opportunity to create profiles and exchange tips, advice and ideas. The free virtual cinema is now in its second week of a 3 week exposition.

Apple Patent Mimics Second Life

With the consistent growth of Second Life's virtual community, many Real World businesses have taken note of its innovative platform and joined to cross promote their products to the residents of SL.

Instead of utilizing SL's existing community, Apple computers has taken their marketing objectives a step further by applying for a patent for a virtual online store complete with 3D animations, user generated avatars and the ability to interact with other visitors.

Recently rated number 7 among the list of Top 100 Brands by a research company called Millward Brown, Apple computers is jumping on the virtual community bandwagon in an effort to boost sales by creating a more engaging environment to capture the attention of shoppers.

Whether or not the realization of the plans exhibited by the patent will make it to the internet is unknown. There’s a buzz going around the city of Miami about the crowds of smiling faces pouring out of the building on the corner of Biscayne Boulevard and 78th Street at 7 a.m. nearly every morning.
From laborers, to entertainers to jubilant party goers, everyone in the city knows that Black Gold is where the party’s at. The adult entertainment club has re-opened as seasoned club manager Lenny Moore and financial consultant Bernard Jennings have partnered to kick start a new era in adult entertainment for the elite in Miami.

The multi-entertainment adult themed club boasts 18,000 square feet of luxurious space, 3 main stages, 4 full bars, a movie theatre, theatre style TV screens showing free pay per view sporting events, a 5 Star kitchen serving a full dinner and breakfast menu, valet parking, a private suite for intimate parties, 2 V.I.P. royalty suites complete with thrones as well as state of the art security to ensure that patrons, dancers as well as staff can embrace their fantasies in a safe environment.

More than 26 music videos have been filmed in the building, making use of the sleek design and contemporary styling of the club’s décor. The building was converted to a gentleman’s club from an actual movie theatre, hence the 40-foot-high ceilings and ample space.
Film companies have used the space for scenes in movies like The Crew and Let It Ride. Jennings claims it is the “largest urban adult entertainment venue in South Florida.”

Flashing Lights
On any given night under the flashing lights, pulsating music spun by DJ Papo and amidst the bevy of beauties circulating the club, it’s common to spot a music artist, television producer or celebrity quietly enjoying the party atmosphere.

Cash Money Records head honcho Birdman stopped by to celebrate with rapper Lil Wayne. “It’s my son’s birthday and we have to end the night here,” Birdman said. “It’s Miami night life. I always liked the feel of this club. The DJ is nice, I like the women and it’s a good feel, ya know.”
Atlanta rapper T.I. was spotted hanging out upstairs in VIP among other well known names, “All I can say is, I enjoyed myself,” he said with a grin.

Comedian J. Anthony Brown, actor Will Smith, rapper Missy Elliot, Miami rap pioneer JT Money as well as celebrated radio personality Tom Joyner all have ties to the club.
“Tom Joyner had his bachelor party here,” offered Lenny Moore. “No matter what the economy is going through, there’s always an occasion to celebrate.”

Not Just a Strip Club
Black Gold originated as an idea inspired by the magazine of the same name which was produced by Moore. After publishing the magazine, which proudly showcased Miami’s hottest female bodies, many of his associates wanted to meet the featured beauties. This led to the opening of Black Gold, the adult entertainment club, in June 1998 which subsequently closed in January 2003 due to parking issues.

Moore has had his hands in the adult entertainment business for more than a decade. After his recent departure as the manager of club Diamonds, Moore decided to re-open his gentleman’s club and celebrates his position as part owner of the only 100% Black owned and operated adult entertainment club in South Florida.

One might think adult entertainment clubs are run by sleazy old perverts who prey on shiftless dancers and spend money listlessly, but these club owners are educated, financially savvy businessmen who care about the success of their staff members and dancers.

“This is not a strip club, it’s a gentleman’s lounge,” said Moore, a former University of Miami football player who owned and operated an insurance company for 12 years. “The secret to my success is to follow the rules.”

In addition to his investment duties as a partner in Black Gold, Bernard Jennings is also a mortgage banker and financial radio talk show host. “[Black Gold] is a major corporation that makes a lot of money,” Jennings said. “If you run it professionally, you’ll make money.”
Both Moore and Jennings underwent 26 moral reference checks before being allowed to open and operate Black Gold, which has a 23-hour liquor license as well as permits to host parties and hold concerts.

The Main Attraction
The club’s main attraction are the widely recognized Fantasy Girls. These dancers are hand picked by entertainment coordinator Erica Chase. Night after night these ladies perform, creating an alluring, intoxicating experience that leaves patrons begging for more.

“We don’t just accept any dancers. We have to recognize the dancer’s ability to market themselves,” said Chase as she continued to explain why it’s important that the club hold such high standards. “We’re giving men a chance to live out their fantasies. We don’t want you to come here and see the same thing you see at home.”

Unless you’re a superstar baller or multi-millionaire guru, you may not have the chance to get up close and personal with the likes of the super sexy, premiere Fantasy Girls Platinum and Bounce.

Bounce, also known as Pretty Girl, is 5 feet 2 inches tall with a beautiful smile and a vibrant spirit that lights up the stage. She earned her nickname because of a signature dance move that she developed which attracts multitudes of admirers. Her costumes are tastefully chosen to accentuate her flawless physique. After more than 10 years as a dancer, Bounce knows what it takes to sustain success.

“We give the men what they don’t get at home,” Bounce said. Most would argue that what men want is a cheap thrill but Bounce disagrees. “A lot of them just want to talk and be your friend.”
Lenny Moore agrees with Bounce. “Our dancers are trained to listen,” Moore said. “Men want their egos stroked and that is what these girls are trained to do.”

Bounce took a 3 year break from her dancing career to become a personal assistant for a well known Miami Heat basketball player. After learning that Moore would be reopening Black Gold, Bounce eagerly joined his team and returned to her old lifestyle.

“We make more money in four months than executives make in a year,” Bounce said. “I’m a homeowner. I have investments. Besides…the best thing about being financially independent is, you can be with whoever you like. You can date a man with money or a man without money; it’s your call because you already have your own.”

When the DJ announces that veteran dancer Platinum is about to take the stage, all eyes are drawn to the largest circular main stage. Although she’s built like a stallion she purrs seductively like a kitten. When Platinum strides majestically toward the long silver pole, your eyes are captivated by her curvaceous physique. She commands the attention of on lookers as she gracefully teases them with her impeccable body and dazzling pole dancing skills.

Platinum has danced at Rolexx, CoCo’s, Magic City in Atlanta, Cleo’s in Orlando and Hustlers in New Orleans where she said they have a great appreciation for women.

“A lot of people think that we just come here and whore around,” said Platinum who is also a homeowner and entrepreneur. “But I look at this as a business. This is what I choose to do. This is what makes me happy. I love what I do, I’m an entertainer.”

Moore realizes that there is a certain measure of discipline needed to handle the amount of money that his dancers earn. To teach them how to manage the fruit of their labor, he offers monthly financial management courses with guest speakers and workshops.

“Being a dancer is like driving a cab,” Moore said as we relaxed in the Black Gold RV. “It gets you from where you are to where you want to be.”

For the patron who deserves to be pampered, Black Gold offers the use of their plush RV. The Fleetwood Revolution is 40 feet long and has an all leather interior, satellite television, surround sound stereo system, 5 disc DVD changer, a CD changer and all wood cabinetry throughout.
There is a fully stocked wet bar, double sink, coffee maker, kitchen, washer and dryer, stand up shower, separate toilet stall and a king sized bedroom. The expandable living room allows that extra space if your party wants to get out of control.

“We’ll pick the patron up and take them around with their guests to other clubs,” Jennings explained. “Ultimately we’ll get them back to Black Gold. We’ll feed them steak, lobster and shrimp. They’ll enjoy the club and then we’ll take them back home safely. No drinking and driving, no text messaging while driving, everybody’s safe and sound. Everybody’s a rock star for 4 hours,” Jennings said with a laugh.

But, according to recent research published in the Social Behavior and Personality Journal, there are four distinct motivating factors that influence your desire to become romantically involved with someone. It’s as though you have a need that you want someone else to fill. When you find someone who fills that need, then love can bloom. However, when the need is unhealthy, it can be detrimental to the relationship.

Take a look at these 4 motivating factors and their effect on the relationship.

Distress
One of the most important motivating factors for women who fall in love is the desire to escape from loneliness, anxiety and helplessness. Someone in a distressing situation like single parenthood, may be more likely to have a strong desire for a relationship to escape the pressures of making decisions and taking care of a family alone.

The woman who seeks a romantic relationship for this reason may become dependent on the relationship because their mate is seen as a solution to their problem. If the relationship doesn’t last, the person may seek out another relationship to fill the void creating an endless cycle of attachment, not to the person but to the idea of not being alone when faced with a problem.

Identity Enhancement
Take a minute and list a few of the qualities that you would want in your partner. He could be wealthy, creative, and ambitious or even an entrepreneur. Then use that same list and check off how many of those same traits that you have. Chances are, you fall short of having all of the qualities on the list and there’s a reason for that.

While these women believe that these traits are generally desirable, the desire for a mate who has traits that you don’t possess may be an indication that your motivating factor for romance is to enhance your identity. Being with someone who is smarter than you are or more successful than you are in any area will surely boost your knowledge because by being around them their good habits and traits will rub off on you.

The downside to pursuing a relationship to enhance your identity is the inclination to develop a more manic attraction to your lover, often losing your sense of self in order to become more like the person you admire.

Many women satisfy their sexual desires by pursuing a romantic relationship. ''The future'' is the biggest incentive for young voters on South Florida's college campuses, but free T-shirts, debates and online networking help spark interest, too.

When 20-year-old Shane Johnson signed on to become a resident assistant at Nova Southeastern University, he figured he'd have to explain the rules of dorm living, offer advice about college life and maybe plan a social event or two. He had no idea that his stint as an RA would lead to organizing Step It Up, a campus-wide movement to promote awareness of the political process.

While thinking of ways to educate his floor's residents about politics, Johnson discussed a few of his ideas with his advisors and they encouraged him to expand the project. His events soon became an outreach to the entire campus and have inspired a wave of political interest for the student body.

Step It Up boasts multiple registration drives, complete with an electronic voting system that confirms voter registration status, as well as the location of the registration.

''We registered over 100 students in a three-day span,'' says Johnson, a junior who is a business major.

The initiative also invites guest speakers to campus to encourage students to participate in the voting process. Upcoming speakers include Brenda Smith, Broward County's supervisor of elections, and a group of war veterans, who will speak about Iraq.

''In the past, we've been seen as the age range that doesn't care,'' Johnson says. ``This is our country, we are the leaders of tomorrow and we have to do whatever it takes to know what's going on and have an active voice in the world.''

Further south, at the University of Miami, there are four political organizations registered on campus: the Council for Democracy, Get Out the Vote, College Republicans and Young Democrats.

Mewelau Hall, 23, is a senior who serves as the director of Get Out the Vote (GOTV). This non-partisan group works with other partisan groups to engage students in the political process. With a staff of 12, Hall and the members of GOTV hold mock debates, political rallies and voter registration drives. They also give away T-shirts and food to remind students that the voting process is not boring.

''Even though we give free pizza to students who vote, it's not to coerce them, it's to let them know that there is an incentive to voting,'' Hall says. ``The biggest incentive will be their future.''

MOCK POLITICS
On the Miami Shores campus of Barry University, students combined their acting skills with their political knowledge in a full-scale mock debate that represented all the candidates on the ballot for the January presidential primary. That was followed by a mock election.

The debate drew representatives from the Democratic National Committee/Florida Democratic Party, as well as a rep from the Rudy Giuliani campaign.

The College Republicans at Florida International University offer registration drives on and off campus. Several members also are active in Republican campaigns, where they've been able to witness the process firsthand.

Instead of bringing in intermediaries to explain platforms and policies, College Republicans have reached out to candidates and campaign leaders to speak on campus. The school has had visits from U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman and former New York Mayor Giuliani.

USING FACEBOOK
''The people elect the decision makers and if you don't vote, then you can't really complain about the decisions being made,'' says Juan Carlos Rabaina, 21, a representative of College Republicans.

College Democrats meet once a week, hand out voter registration forms and use Facebook.com to reach out to students.

''We have 235 members in our Facebook group,'' says Chris Cabral, 21, president of the group. ``When we have events, we put them on Facebook and we receive RSVPs from that. We've realized that sending out e-mails is less effective than Facebook because students don't check their e-mail everyday, but they always check Facebook.''

College Democrats also go door to door in the neighborhoods surrounding the campus, informing residents about the candidates and registering voters.

''It's the most effective mode of voter contact,'' Cabral says. ``If you talk to people one-on-one about the political process, they're more likely to listen and take action.''

How Big Is Regret?

Ahhh…Regret. We've all been there before.

"If only I had gone for that law degree instead of sociology, I'd be making six figures by now." or "Why didn't I break up with Damian the first time he lied to me? I wouldn't have all these trust issues with men."

You could probably write an entire book filled with vivid descriptions of the life decisions that you have made and the confusion or bliss that followed. Although past joys will most likely outnumber disappointments, for some reason we tend to focus on what seemed to be our failures, magnifying the experiences and allowing the memories to become predictors of our future.

Regret has two sisters, misery and depression. When these twisted sisters sneak into your life, it's difficult to get them to leave. Even when you manage to close the door, they sneak back in taunting you through distorted mental images and breaking your spirit. You can break the vicious cycle of regret. The key is to learn to trust yourself.

Do you trust yourself?

Do you understand that you are the only person who is equipped to make the best decisions for your life? Each choice that you have made along your life's journey yields to you becoming better at defining what you DO want for your life. No choice is a mistake. Every choice is a defining moment.

You define your best life by experiencing the contrasting moments, those moments and situations where you KNOW what you have is not what you really want. You would have never known that you prefer chocolate cake over vanilla, if you hadn't tasted them both. You would have never known that you desire open communication in a relationship until you were involved with a man that kept secrets. Allow each of these contrasting experiences that you encounter to be the springboard for making life choices that reflect what you do want.

I recently went out with a man who was funny, handsome and successful, but he was also selfish. After our date I didn't become upset because he didn't treat me the way that I desire to be treated. Instead, I focused on those qualities that he had that made me attracted to him, and then I replayed the date over in my mind with him behaving in a manner that was more suitable to my tastes. That exercise allowed excitement and joyful anticipation to flow through my spirit. If I continue to brood over the disastrous date, I may never go out with a man again. Why should one train wreck of a date derail my potential happiness? Now that I know what I don't want, it will be much easier to recognize (and appreciate) those things that I do want.

While you are sitting there, slumped over, focused on the boulder in your life, you're oblivious to the alternate pathways to moving forward to where you really want to be.

When you're focused on the problems of the past, your subconscious mind is searching for evidence to validate your innate beliefs.

I always make the wrong choices.

I never get it right.

I can't do this.

As a result, you become less confident in your choices, which will inevitably lead to regretting every decision when the slightest challenge presents itself. Your life will be much more pleasant when you trust that you have always made the best decisions for your life and you will continue to do so.

Replace those limiting beliefs with these heartfelt affirmations:

I am capable of making the best decisions for my life.

Every choice that I make sets me on the right path to my most brilliant future.

I am wise enough, strong enough and intelligent enough to achieve anything my heart desires.

I trust myself in every way.

The past is dead. The future is waiting. The ultimate power is in your NOW. Regret nothing. You have not made a wrong choice. Trust yourself, you always get it right.

Does Time Heal All Wounds?

There’s an old adage that says, “time heals all wounds” but the process of waiting on time to help you get through a devastating break-up, a life changing decision or a new and challenging stage in your life may sometimes feels like torture. Laden with memories of the past where things were more comfortable and more familiar while at the same time, facing an uncertain future, we sometimes feel stuck in the horrific moment and succumb to the fear of never experiencing joy again.

In our microwave society, where we expect everything we want to happen in 30 seconds or less, the patience needed to get through the trials of life often equals the boredom and frustration of watching your hair grow.

It is true that time heals all wounds, but it’s the way you choose to use that time that will bring you closer to your desired outcome. As we wait for time to pass, what we are really doing is building our faith. Without faith in the healing process, it’s easy to make the situation worse by backtracking and grasping for what you once had. Your life can not go back to the way it was, you can only move forward. Once you recognize that the waiting period is really the healing process, you’ll be free to experience the bliss of your impending success.

If life’s trials were like a deep cut or an open wound, here’s what you’ll need to help it heal.

Cleansing
You clean the wound by paying attention to it, examining the severity of the damage. Allow yourself to take stock of how much damage was done. Don’t feel guilty about the fact that you are hurting; no man or woman is immune to this inevitable part of life. No stage in life is permanent. Life is a continuation of thrills, pleasure and life lessons. Clean your wound by recognizing that there is a life lesson in there. Once you step outside of your “situation” and recognize it as an isolated incident instead of a portal for failure, you speed up the healing process.

Medication
The best medicine for these type of wounds will always be forgiveness. Forgive yourself first. Forgive the others who were involved once that’s done. You are allowed to make choices for your life. You are smarter than you think you are. Nothing that belongs to you can ever be taken away. If you have experienced a “loss” it wasn’t really a loss, it was more of an adjustment in your circumstances to get you back on track to where you need to be. Forgive yourself. You didn’t lose out on anything. In truth, you have made room for the right circumstances and people that are supposed to be in your life, to waltz right in and take their rightful place.

Keep Living
Don’t keep picking at the scab; leave it alone. Continue to take care of yourself by keeping up your appearance and enjoying the activities that bring you happiness. It’s not wise to keep your focus on the pain you are experiencing. Change your focus. Notice all of the other great experiences that are a part of your life. Do you have great friends? Is your life better than it was five years ago? If you made it through a rough time in your past you have a good reason to celebrate and an even better reason to believe you can do it again.

Controversial- Mediatakout.com feeds the public's hunger for news about black celebrities- and fills a void left by other gossip sites.

Radio personality Supa Cindy bursts into fits oflaughter as she reads theheadlines from her favoritegossip website, MediaTakeOut.com.

"I am hooked and addictedto this website," laughs Supa of South Florida's WEDR-FM (99.1).

She's not alone. The African-American celebrity gossip site has skyrocketed in popularity since its inception in January 2006, when founder and executive editor Fred Mwangaguhunga noticed that African-American celebrities were largely ignored by more mainstream celebrity gossip sites, such as TMZ.com and PerezHilton.com.

Mwangaguhunga, a former lawyer, claims his MediaTakeOut.com -- MTO for short-- now attracts nearly 2 million unique visitors each day, feeding viewers' desire for off-collar jokes and salacious rumors that poke fun at celebrities like rappers Trina and Lil Wayne, as well as actress Gabrielle Union, who is often photographed partying in South Beach clubs.

The tabloid-style site has its share of detractors. Critics have accused it of fabricating stories and padding the number of hits reported. But to some, the controversy is part of the appeal.

OUTRAGEOUS' CONTENT
Affectionately known as''The Skirt with the Dirt,"Supa Cindy lists MTO as her No. 1 source for the gossip she dishes as co-hostof "The Big Lip Bandit Morn-ing Show."

"I like MediaTakeOutbecause it's outrageous!'' Supa says. "Sometimes they report something that I don't personally think is true, but I will report it and then say,'You can believe it or not.'The fun part is waiting a few days for [other media outlets]to report it and then seeing if it's really true."

MTO's popularity stems from its controversial "exclusives." The website claimed to be the first to report Tameka Foster's pregnancy from R&B star Usher, as well as entertainment mogul Did-dy's secret love child. Its sto-ries are often quoted and crit-icized by MTV News, BET and syndicated radio personalities Wendy Williams and Tom Joyner.

"I think people are drawn to websites like MediaTakeOut because the publicists and television make celebrities out to be perfect," Supa says.

"Fans want to know that even stars go through negative things and everyday drama just like they do."

Before he became an Internet entrepreneur, Mwangaguhunga, 33, was a corporate attorney on Wall Street. He then tried his hand as a business owner before selling off his Manhattan-based laundry service. While advertising for his laundry business, Mwangaguhunga advertised on blogs. When he noticed how well the blogs were doing financially, he decided it was time to join them.

SMALL OFFICE, BIG NAME
Mwangaguhunga was recently named one of the''100 Giants'' in the world of entertainment by the urban music magazine Giant, a list that included Kanye West and Oprah Winfrey.

MediaTakeOut doesn't employ a large staff. Apart from Mwangaguhunga, there are only two full-time employees in the downtown Manhattan office space, neither of which are professional journalists. But Mwangaguhunga says he doesn't need aroom full of reporters.

"What we do have are the people," he says.

The website relies heavily on tips sent in by readers, many of whom claim to have the inside scoop on celebrities personal escapades. The regular use of unnamed sources has spawned criti-cism from other gossip site owners, journalists and celebrities who say the reportsare inaccurate and fabricated.

Mwangaguhunga counters that the stories on MTO are''100 percent true." He says the site goes to great lengths to ensure the accuracy of its reports and has even even hired private investigators to verify stories.

EVERYBODY LIKES TO WATCH
If its viewership of 2 millionis accurate, MTO's audience is larger than many popular mainstream websites, as well as respected sites that target African Americans, such asEssence.com, AOL's Black-voices.com and BlackAmericaWeb.com. Some may wonder why there is such amassive following for a website that runs headlines like "Rapper Lil Wayne Behind 4 Months On His Car Payment'' and "Jennifer Aniston Picks the Wedgie Out of Her Booty."

"Well, why do people read The National Enquirer? Why do they read The Sun or any of those other tabloids?" says Richard Prince, author of the online media column "Prince's Journal-isms'' for the Maynard Institute. "It's the human impulse for gossip."

Prince says MTO is full of "hype and exaggeration''and should not be compared to traditional news and entertainment sources.

"It's like asking, 'What's the difference between People magazine and the National Enquirer?' '' Prince says.

Mirlande Noel, 23, of Miami has her own take on why there's widespread fascination with MTO.

"Each of those publications and websites caters to a specific audience," Noel says.''Essence.com caters to amore sophisticated Black reader, BlackAmericaWeb.com has a more mature, educated audience, and Mediatakeout.com's stories attract an audience where, regardless of your education or your socio-economical background, they communicate in a way that all of us can relate to. Regardless of how educated we are, or how much money we have in our pockets, at the end of the day, we can all pull out that 'sistergirl' and laugh at these kind of stories."

Making His Stamp On Black History

Al Ashley was only 5 years old when his father took him by the hand and led him up to the chapel at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama to participate in a monumental celebration.

Ashley watched as his father beamed with pride, tears welling up in his eyes, as the U.S. Postal Service and many notable African Americans celebrated the release of the Booker T. Washington postage stamp, the first one to feature an African American. This day marked a historically significant occasion in the early 1940s, especially for a city like Tuskegee.

The city set the mark for African Americans’ achievement by creating a community that nurtured its self sufficiency and produced brilliant minds that went on to make history, including Booker T. Washington, an honored resident of the city.

Since that emotionally charged day in April 1940, Ashley has collected every single postage stamp honoring an African-American hero, from Booker T. Washington in 1940 to Ella Fitzgerald in 2007. The entire collection, along with the five coins featuring African-American contributors to American history, has traveled the country in a remarkable exhibit that is on display at the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach through Feb. 29.

Ashley’s exhibit also includes a thrilling narrative detailing his experiences meeting nearly 25 of the 81 African Americans honored by the U.S. Postal Service, including:
• Jackie Robinson, the first African American major league baseball player;
• Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune-Cookman University;
• Joe Louis, one of the greatest heavyweight boxing champions in history;
• Duke Ellington, the ambassador of jazz music;• George Washington Carver, a renowned agricultural scientist.

“Dr. Carver treated me when I was a kid,” Ashley recounted. “My brother took me up to the [George Washington Carver] museum to visit Dr. Carver after he noticed that I had ringworm on my head. Dr. Carver looked at my head, turned it a couple of times, went into the back room, and came back with some salve on his hand. He rubbed it onto my head and then walked us out saying, ‘You will be fine, young man.’’’

The young Ashley turned out to be more than fine. He went on to graduate from Texas Southern University before enjoying a fruitful career at the Stanford University Linear Accelerator Center.While serving there, he was instrumental in designing a program for students in math, science and engineering that became the Summer Science Program. He earned a Presidential Award for his efforts.

Bearing witness to such a plethora of great minds who were making history was a common occurrence for residents of Tuskegee back in those days. The city was considered the Black Mecca for African-American greatness due to the influx of professional entertainers and intellectuals. They flocked to the city to trade wisdom and entertain the wounded veterans at the only VA hospital in the country that welcomed African Americans.

Nationally celebrated radio personality Tom Joyner also grew up in Tuskegee during an era when African Americans across the country were awakening to their sense of self worth and fighting for their civil rights.

“When I was a kid every notable black scholar, entertainer, activist, preacher, etc., made a stop in Tuskegee,” Joyner said. “I remember seeing Dr. King and members of the Black Panthers…So many remarkable people were residents of Tuskegee, such as Tuskegee airmen Benjamin O. Davis and Chappie James, George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington. The debate coach Denzel Washington portrayed in [the feature film] The Great Debators, Melvin B. Tolson, lived in Tuskegee and taught at the college,” Joyner added. “Our town was very rich with accomplished African Americans and it made us kids feel like there was nothing that we couldn’t do.

”When asked if he remembered the day that Booker T. Washington was honored as the first African American to appear on a postage stamp, Joyner joked, “How old do you think I am? Just because I love black history and present a Black History Fact every day on the Tom Joyner Morning Show doesn’t mean I was there for every event! You have to ask my older brother, Albert, about something that happened in 1940!”

No, you won’t have to call up Uncle Albert or travel back in time to get a personal glimpse of a tribute to our heritage. Ashley’s exhibit and lecture, showcased at the Spady Museum, is going into its second month of exhibition, due to its popularity.

“We have had a great response with this exhibit with many visitors coming out to see it,” said Brandy Brownlee, the Spady Museum educator. “We have found that young and old alike in many cases learned something new that they did not know. Often for our older visitors, many of whom collected stamps and coins, it was a way to reminisce by looking back on people they remember during their lifetime. For younger visitors, who are still learning about much of the African American heroes, it brings to life what they are reading in their textbooks.”

Young Professionals Connect In Miami

It was a crisp, clear night in Miami’s Design District as more than 70 young professionals and guests gathered during the interactive networking event, “Life: The Game.”

The event, presented by the Metro-Miami Action Plan Trust and Miami-Dade College (North Campus) at the Art Fusion Gallery on Nov. 30, offered various simulated “life stations.” Experts in health and fitness, wine, food and travel, business etiquette and social graces moderated the simulations.

The event was sponsored by the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, created specifically for the members of the Young Professionals Network (YPN).

The chamber organized the YPN in October to attract, retain and empower the young, black professional community of South Florida.The group allows members access to established business professionals and a wealth of personal growth opportunities.

The organization targets young professionals between the ages of 25 and 40, and has attracted more than 50 new members since its inception.The group holds monthly meetings and caters to young black professionals from all career fields and at all levels. Membership dues are $100 annually and are re-invested into the plethora of activities hosted by the YPN.

Pembroke Pines resident Nerissa Street was introduced to the YPN after meeting chamber President Bill Diggs. He invited her to participate in a focus group that assessed the needs and concerns of the disconnected young, black professional community of South Florida.

The 33-year-old CEO of The Artist Initiative, an organization created to assist artists and entrepreneurs to gain financial stability, was eager to become a part of the YPN.

“After meeting everyone during the focus group, I realized that this was an organization that had progressive, upwardly mobile young professionals who were joining together to improve who they were,” Street said. “Honestly,” Street continued. “I need this group of upwardly mobile professionals because I need a place to serve. This is a group where I feel that I can make an impact, develop myself, and help others.”

During the Nov. 30 event, the Street’s “Culture Creates Commerce” lecture challenged participants to recognize the power of art and culture in business.

It was the perfect complement to other notable presentations by Harriet Cole, the creative director of Ebony magazine, as well as fitness experts Tanya and Kwaku James, who operate a personal coaching and fitness business in Miami Shores.“Life: The Game” was the fourth quarterly installment of the YPN’s Business Empowerment Networking Series. It was an example of the YPN’s effort to strengthen its membership and move forward with a goal of attracting the nation’s finest young, black professionals to South Florida.

Cedric McMinn, 29, a government relations specialist with the law firm of Becker & Poliakoff in Miami said, “I feel like YPN has changed my outlook on South Florida. It feels great to be a part of an organization that suits my personal and professional needs. YPN provides wonderful opportunities for young, black professionals like myself to strive even harder for success. As a member of YPN, I feel I am a part of the positive change that is going to occur in South Florida.”

For 28-year-old Marsha Griffiths, a Commercial Broker with Terranova, a commercial real estate advisory firm, the YPN was a much-needed boost for her connection to other professionals in South Florida.

“I have had the pleasure of meeting young professionals like myself including people who are natives of Miami as well as alumni of my alma mater, the University of Florida,” Griffith said. “During the first YPN meeting when we unveiled the issue of Success South Florida magazine featuring Mr. Diggs and other YPN members, there were numerous individuals in attendance at this event from so many professional backgrounds. I never thought these people existed in South Florida. I was in awe.”

As young professionals in the South Florida community are being connected and nurtured through this organization, many people are saluting Diggs for the implementation of his vision.

“I think Bill Diggs is the ‘Moses’ of YPN,” Griffiths said with a smile. “Long after Mr. Diggs is gone, his legacy will continue on as the founder of a movement that has fostered the growth of young, black professionals in South Florida. I look forward to the day that our city rivals the black, educated, professional population in cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, DC.”

Young Professionals Thrive In Miami

As the number of Young black professionals looking for a place to thrive and grow continues to rise, South Florida is fast becoming the leading destination of choice.

The Young Professionals Network (YPN) is a newly created organization comprised of the area’s brightest young black professionals. The YPN is on a mission to attract and retain the nation’s finest young leaders by allowing them access to corporate leaders and decision makers while promoting professional and personal development through networking and social activities.

“This organization will fill a void that a lot of people within this age range needs,” says Deanna Pierce, a 28-year-old Miami native. “It will not only allow us to gain mentors, but also have support in our everyday lives. The biggest concern that I noticed was the matter of retention, trying to keep young professionals in South Florida. We have the resources, it’s just a matter of pooling them together.”

After graduating from law school at Florida Agriculture & Mechanical University, Pierce considered moving to other cities to begin her career but ultimately decided to return to her hometown to explore career opportunities. “I have no regrets about my decision,” Pierce says.

She now serves as the Fraud Director for City National Bank, a position which utilizes her strong analytical skills. “My job is fast paced and always changing, just like Miami,” Pierce says with a smile.

Pierce is excited about becoming a founding member of the blossoming Young Professionals Network.

The YPN operates under the umbrella of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce and offers access to mentorship, social development and networking opportunities with other young influencers in this city’s melting pot of business and culture.

Bill Diggs, President and CEO of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce began piecing together the idea for the Young Professionals Network a year ago when he recognized that young Black professionals were leaving Miami after being dissatisfied with the opportunities the city had to offer in the areas of civic, social and business development.

“Having lived in Atlanta for quite some time, I noticed there always seemed to be a movement of young professionals who were adamant about networking and creating a strong professional community,” Diggs says. “I wanted to help create that same experience here in South Florida.”

Diggs hopes that the YPN will flourish as its members utilize the same leadership skills and tenacity that they have developed as professionals in order to transform the city of Miami into the premiere destination for young black professionals.

“These are our next generation of leaders in Miami,” Diggs says. “Not leaders ten years from now, but right now!”

Environmental Attorney N. Patrick Range knows firsthand the impact that a strong leadership has on this city. Range’s grandmother, M. Athalie Range was heralded as an icon for community activism and leadership in Miami before she passed last year.

The 30-year-old graduate of Morehouse College now practices law as an associate at Greenburg, Traurig, PA. Although his days are filled with filing applications for developments across the city, he strikes a delicate balance of work and play by enjoying golf and exploring the many restaurants in Miami.

Range holds a distinct vision for the impact an organization like YPN could have on the city of Miami. “The business community as a whole will benefit from this organization,” Range says. “Corporate America is looking for us. They recognize the value we bring to the table, the uniqueness we provide by allowing access to all parts of the business world through our multi-ethnic background.”

Thamiah Tutt, Sr. Development Officer for The United Way of Miami is grateful to Bill Diggs for moving forward with organizing the YPN.

“I want to be a part of an organization with other like-minded individuals. People who are focused on making a difference in the community and are career minded,” Tutt says. “A lot of people need to know that they are not alone. There are opportunities to develop themselves as professionals and on a personal level and YPN will be a part of that.”

Originally from Seattle, the 28-year-old graduate of Clark Atlanta University has enjoyed sparring as an amateur boxer for the past four years. Tutt plans to use her aggressiveness outside of the ring in an effort to help other young professionals become acclimated to life in the magic city.

Philip Lay knows what it is like to start from scratch and build a firm foundation for his career in a new city. He decided to give South Florida a try after completing his education at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He packed up his car and wished for the best as he tackled the many obstacles that life after college presents.

Embracing those risks proved to be a success for Lay although he has faced his fair share of trials.

“It’s been a journey being here in South Florida,” 27-year-old Lay admits. “It’s not easy to move up in the corporate world because there are not that many people who look like us in upper management. In my line of work, I’m at an advantage because I work around people who look like me and are making great money in South Florida.”

Lay manages and develops advertising accounts for Hot 105, an urban radio station that prides itself on being the home of the number one rated Tom Joyner Morning Show as well as broadcasting the best mix of oldies and R&B.

“I see the YPN being an effective tool to help people who are already here who need help and people who are coming here from somewhere else,” Lay says. “Being able to make a difference for another person of color who may come down here is an important goal that we hope to accomplish.”

Young Black Professionals (YBP’s)

To explore and properly evaluate the need to nurture and mentor young Black professionals in South Florida, the Miami Dade Chamber of Commerce organized a series of 4 focus groups, where 39 young Black South Florida professionals discussed the YPN concept and completed an in-depth survey.

Focus group attendees are representative of South Florida’s YBP community. They are without a doubt the “cream of the crop”, representing a variety of industries including Advertising/Marketing (9), Government/Public Policy (5), Consulting Services (4), Legal (3), and Health Care (3). Other industries included arts and entertainment, accounting, banking, entrepreneurial, information technology, media, pharmaceautical, sales and sports. This professionally diverse group hailed from cities like Atlanta, New York, Boston, New Orleans, Washington, Seattle and Miami, to name a few. The Caribbean Islands represented Haiti, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.

As a result of the focus group the YPN has gauged that the majority of its core target group are:

Key Findings

Over 90% of focus group participants are either thinking of leaving South Florida or has a friend who is thinking of leaving within the next 12 months. This supports the “Brain Drain” phenomenon noted by a recent report published by Florida International University where 40% of Blacks earning between $60,000-$80,000 expressed a desire to leave.

The YPN focus group discussed this challenge and reported the following:

BSO Offers Chance To Create Hit Song

The Broward Sheriff's Office recently offered a dream come true for budding song writers who believed they have the skills to create a hit song.

BSO teamed up with the Harold Reitman Boys & Girls Club to offer talented young writers the chance to win $1,000 for writing an uplifting song.

The Just Write Song Contest, open to Broward County residents between the ages of 10 and 18, last month accepted song entries that displayed a positive message, one that encourages communication with law enforcement, school officials and the community.

“We have 62 school resource deputies in 69 Broward County schools that are spreading the message about the contest,’’ said Lt. Anthony DeMarco, of BSO’s Youth Intervention & Enforcement Division. “We've already received quite a few entries that really hit the mark.’’

The contest’s official guidelines, which can be found on the BSO website (www.sheriff.org), offered a step-by-step guide for structuring song lyrics. It also offers music downloads as well as recommended song topics.

The Just Write Song Contest sought entries based on themes like respecting women, staying in school, pregnancy prevention and safe driving.

“We're trying to reach out to the community and get some positive messages out there through this contest,’’ DeMarco said.

The contest, which began on Oct. 1, accepted entries until Oct. 31.

The 10 best entrants will record their songs as part of a compilation CD in the fully equipped recording studio at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County's administrative headquarters, 877 Northwest 61 Street, Fort Lauderdale.

The writer of the best song entry will receive $1,000. The Just Write CD will be professionally mixed, packaged and distributed by the Broward Sherriff's Office. Distribution methods have not been determined yet.

The-state-of-the-art recording studio was donated to the Boys & Girls Club by a group of individuals late last year and is now managed by 28-year-old Shawn Elliott of Fort Lauderdale, whose love of music led to a fruitful career as a hip-hop recording artist.

Elliott now lends his time and energy to sharing the same love for music production with members of the Boys & Girls Club.

“Kids come in and write their own music. I teach them how to use the equipment and we record in the studio,’’ Elliot said. “It teaches the kids confidence, helps with their public speaking skills and teaches them respect for themselves and others. This contest is just the first step toward helping these kids improve their lives through music.’’

Puppy Love: When Your Pet Is Your Baby

Thirty-year-old Carmi Thomas is a devoted non traditional parent. She happily prepares home made meals for her 8-month-old. She wakes up early to brush his hair, give him vitamins and spend time with him before dropping him off at daycare.

By day Carmi trains social workers for certification in Hillsborough County, but that isn't her real job. Her real job is catering to and pampering an 8-month-old Coton De Tulear puppy she calls Hollywood.

“If I had to do it all over again I would’ve waited until I finished my masters degree because he’s so time consuming,” says Carmi, who adopted Hollywood when he was 7 weeks old. Carmi, who is single with no kids, loves to pamper her pooch.

Besides allowing Hollywood to sleep in the bed with her, ‘on top of the covers only’ she insists, Carmi enjoys rubbing his belly until he falls asleep in the evenings. She spoils Hollywood by purchasing the latest canine couture and showcasing his superstar swagger in a variety of jazzy dog carriers that look more like fashionable purses.

“Hollywood is a superstar just like his Mama,” Carmi says proudly. “He was three pounds when I got him so I carried him in my purse. On the weekends we go everywhere together. I take him to the mall. I sneak him into Wal-Mart. I even sneak him inside restaurants when I can’t find one with outside patio seating.”

“He’s a Superstar,” Carmi squeals excitedly. “We’re on our way to the top!”

Yes, Carmi is a super Mommy, but Hollywood does have a father. Her boyfriend, Greg Warren whom she has been dating off and on for more than a year was with her when she adopted Hollywood and has grown to share the same affection for the pup.

During the pair’s most recent ‘off’ period, Carmi and Greg decided that they would have to sit down to establish visitation rights with Hollywood.

But this type of puppy love isn’t celebrated by everyone in Carmi’s life. Michael Oliver has known Carmi for 17 years and he says this kind of love may be dangerous.

“First of all, she came over to the house with that little purse with the dog in it. I was like, ‘Why don’t you leave that dog at home? Why are you walking around with that dog in that purse?’” Michael explains. “I don’t think she should love her dog that much. I think it’s displaced love but now it’s too late because she’s in too deep. It’s 6 months in and she can’t get out now.”

While Michael wants the best for his friend, he believes that her devotion to her pet is an attempt to fulfill a void in her life. “She just bought a house and I guess she didn’t want to be there by herself,” Michael says. “She doesn’t have anyone to talk to but Hollywood. Hollywood probably understands what she’s talking about. He probably licks the tears off her cheeks. My wish for them is that they would be together forever. Let no one come between her and Hollywood…no other dogs either.”

Dr. Karen Johnson of The Banfield Path Pet Hospital in Portland, Oregon disagrees with Michael. “That is someone who has obviously not had any pets,” she remarked after hearing his comment. “Maybe as a child his family had animals but didn’t consider them to be pets. There are research studies that show that pets decrease stress.”

“That kind of bond exists because nothing else in the world that gives unconditional love like pets do,” Dr. Johnson continued. “They provide a sense of joy and a sense of purpose. I bet if you go down to your local animal shelter and pick one up, you’ll fall in love too.”

When Carmi comes home at the end of a long day she can expect that Hollywood will be jumping up excitedly as if to say, “You’re home! You’re home! I’m so glad you’re home!”

“He’s my little companion, my little friend,” Carmi says softly. “When I’m not talking to God, I’ll talk to Hollywood.”

Arraignment Set for Man Accused of Slaying Ex-Girlfriend

An April 26th arraignment date is scheduled for Timothy Shepherd, the man accused of strangling his former girlfriend, mutilating her body and burning it on two barbecue grills on the patio of his apartment.

Shepherd’s bond has been set at $250,000 but his attorney, Chip Lewis, advised that his life might be in danger if he made his bond.

“The investigation is still underway,” District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal said. “We are still collecting evidence and we will present it to the grand jury sometime hopefully before the arraignment date.”

The prosecutor assigned to the Shepherd case in the 183rd District Court, Marie Primm said, “I look forward to presenting the evidence and I am confident in prosecuting this case.”

Tynesha Stewart, a 19-year-old Texas A&M University freshman, was home on spring break when she disappeared after leaving her mother’s apartment with Shepherd on March 15.

According to Stewart’s friends, she ended the relationship with Shepherd, a former pizza delivery driver, earlier this year.

Authorities allege that the 27-year-old Shepherd confessed to strangling Stewart because he was angry that she had become involved in a relationship with another man. In the police report Shepherd confessed to burning the body, but the absence of physical evidence supporting this confession has caused community members to demand a more involved investigation.

A community protest in the form of a press conference, organized by members of the Houston Area Urban League as well as members of the NAACP demanded that the Harris County Sheriff’s department conduct a more thorough investigation into the case.

“The protest was a call for a much more comprehensive assessment of what happened to Tynesha,” said Sylvia Brooks, CEO of the Houston Area Urban League. “We do not feel that a thorough enough investigation of the whole case has been done by the fire department that went into the guy’s house or by the Sheriff’s Department.

“They are concerned that the Sheriff asked for money to search the landfill and is not using it. Some members of our group have spoke with the family and the family indicated that they did want them to search for her body,” Brooks asserted.

Despite claims that the complete destruction of human remains requires extremely high temperatures that would be difficult to reach with a home patio grill, Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas remained firm in his insistence that there are no remnants of Stewart’s body.

“Sheriff Thomas said there are no remains to be found and any search would be fruitless,” stated John Martin, Lieutenant Public Information Officer for the Harris County sheriff’s office. “Our investigators continue to strengthen their case. They’ve been out to the apartment searching for any forensic evidence. It remains to be seen how the case will proceed.”

In response to the protest, Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas issued a statement that read, “Never in my 38 years of law enforcement career have I been subjected to such harsh and unnecessary criticism, and based on the information being relayed to the public, the criticism was warranted. My decision was based on facts that were known to investigators or still being developed by investigators, and yet, facts that I could not discuss outside of law enforcement without compromising the investigation.

“The public in general, and Tynesha Stewart’s family in particular, deserve the best possible criminal investigation that the Harris County sheriff’s office can conduct,” the statement continued. “And I refuse to compromise this, or any investigation regardless of the level of scrutiny or criticism this department is facing at the moment.”

Naomi Campbell dishes about the lack of ethnic faces on the runway

There’s a calm excitement backstage as models are being prepared for their runway debut at Houston’s FashionWeekLive 2007 organized by International Management Group (IMG), the managers of top models. Hair dryers are humming as eagle-eyed hairdressers primp and tease unruly locks. Cheekbones are accentuated by Sephora’s leading make-up artists and the team of dressers are systematically organizing the wardrobe ‘looks’ for each IMG model on the board.

At each dressing table, a reflection peeks back at you from the brightly lit mirrors. These are the same faces that you see in fashion magazines; serious expressions, hollow eyes, blonde hair and pale skin. But where are the Black faces among these celebrated beauties?

As you search for a face that resembles yours, you’re hard pressed to find one. That is…until you come across a dainty figure with a coco complexion, carelessly fiddling with her cell phone. Her big brown eyes open wide as she looks up to meet your gaze.

It’s Naomi Campbell, one of the world’s most sought after supermodels. Her introduction into the modeling industry proved to the world that the exclusive fashion lords can appreciate varying degrees of beauty. Over the course of her career, Campbell, who was born in South London, is reported to have appeared on more than 500 magazine covers including Time, Elle and The British Vogue.

This particular evening Campbell’s face lights up when asked about her participation in Houston’s FashionWeekLive, which offered the general public a chance to attend the exclusive showing of 30 of the fashion industry’s hottest looks for Fall 2007.

“I think this is going to take off all over the world,” Campbell said with a grin. “I think it’s a great idea for IMG to come up with this. It’s a great initiative because I feel that we get to share with the rest of the world and not just with the VIP’s and the editors. Its great to be able to spread ourselves to the public and those are the people who put us where we are today. So I feel really happy to be a part of this.”

Campbell, who was one of only two Black faces in IMG’s line-up for the show, paused reflectively when asked if she thought the fashion industry is now more open to embrace different ethnicities.

“Yes, it still could be better,” Campbell responded. “I would like to see more Black women on covers of magazines and I would like to see Black women treated equally as white women but I don’t know if that will ever happen. Will it?”

Will it ever happen? That’s the question that’s been on Bethann Hardison’s mind since she began a career as a model in the 1960’s.

“The girl of color has become less and less visible,” Hardison said as she sat erect in her chair, adjusting her posture while waiting for the fashion show to begin. The former model and head of Bethann Management, a now defunct modeling agency based in New York City, who is also the mother of actor Kadeem Hardison and the manager of Tyson Beckford, has remained heavily immersed in the fashion industry. Hardison supports Campbell’s assertion of unequal representation on the runway.

“When you look at television, everything looks very diverse,” Hardison said. “You see everybody and everything looks Black and brown and Latin. Everything is nicely balanced…[In direct contrast to what we see] when we look at the runway and we’re talking about fashion. We’re not talking about commercial television. We’re not talking about America’s Next Top Model because that’s not really fashion. That’s like a beauty pageant. I have no problem saying this. It’s true.”

“It’s a reality show and it’s a very successful one,” Hardison continued. “We must not get confused about what’s really true and what isn’t. When it comes to fashion, the people who decide who’s going to be on [the show] are editors, photographers and stylists who really have nothing to do with [the fashion] world. If you look at what you see go down the runway, you’ll see what’s on it and what’s not on it.”

But who decides who gets to be a model? Are all hopeful models at the mercy of fashion editors? Are a pretty face and a strong desire enough to make it in the industry?

“The person who is going to decide if you’re right for them is the seeker and not the individual who wants to be,” Hardison replied matter of factly. “She’s just got to be the right girl at the right time and be the right thing. Even me. I look. I have an eye. The industry has changed a great deal. No one is going to push a girl up ahead. It’s only going to happen if the girl is dragged [because] someone notices her.”

Marie Fuema, 22, experienced the immediate pull of the modeling industry, unlike most models who face consistent rejection before finding their niche. She left Senegal for the United States to study business management, walked into the IMG offices and walked out with a contract. A year and a half later she shares the runway with widely celebrated models like Naomi Campbell.

“I was really the biggest nerd,” Fuema recalled with a smile. “I had big glasses. I’m wearing contacts. I was the ugliest baby ever. If I showed you my pictures you’d be like, ‘Damn girl!’” But ugly babies can grow up and make runways sizzle, if they have the guts to believe in themselves.

Fuema believed in herself. And Naomi Campbell did too. That’s why Campbell offered words of advice to aspiring young models who believe they have what it takes to step above the color line.

“Keep it tight. Don’t listen to too many people. Try to keep your family around you. Try to be sincere and not take any of it personally. Sometimes you go for a casting and they don’t want you. Sometimes girls can take that really to heart and they can get very upset and hurt by it. That’s what I mean by taking it personally.”

For longevity on or off the runway, Campbell suggested a dose of humility.

“When I mess up. I say it. When I’m sorry, I say it. And I think a lot of people in my industry have forgiven me and given me many chances because I am that way. I am grateful and sincerely blessed to be able to have many opportunities traveling the world, meeting amazing people. I’m now in a stage in my life where I want to be in the business that I am in. I want to do it in a way that is going to set up for many generations to come.”

Power Summit Prepares Future Leaders

It’s no secret that owning a business takes preparation, sacrifice and patience in order to achieve long-term success. Preparing entrepreneurial-minded young professionals for the realities of business ownership was the central message of a recent day-long Power Summit, which was organized by Urban Influence Magazine and the Houston Area Urban League of Young Professionals (HAULYP).

Oscar Joyner, President of Reach Media Inc, a media conglomerate based in Dallas, Texas was the featured speaker. The 31-year-old executive challenged the crowd of young professionals by raising a soul-stirring question, “Are you prepared for all of your dreams to come true?”

“Young, determined, professional African-Americans often have lofty dreams but are ill equipped to handle their own success. Many young Black men want to ‘own their own label’ without understanding basic tax, royalty, and copyright laws. They say they want to own their own company but have never taken a basic business law course to understand some of the simple in and outs of a lease agreement,” said Joyner, son of Radio Fly Jock Tom Joyner.

“So how can you want to own your own company or a record label, but not be prepared if someone should give you the seed capital?” Joyner inquired. “You find yourself with the money to lease a studio but you forgot to take basic accounting or business management and get taken by thelandlord. You have the funds to acquire artists and an office manager but realize you don’t know the first thing about payroll taxes, healthcare benefits, or writing your own operations manual.”

A working knowledge of business is important but according to some young business owners there are other hurdles to overcome.

Julie Griffith, the public relations officer for HAULYP, left the corporate world to start her own public relations firm a year and a half ago. Facing the stumbling blocks she believes African Americans confront early in building a business, Griffith said earning a paycheck every two weeks while starting your own business is actually a hindrance.

“The two-week paycheck is a hindrance because it doesn’t make you work as hard as you would if you didn’t have it. You really don’t have your own business. What you have is a back-up plan for your day job,” commented Griffith, who is now the President and CEO of JGriffith Public Relations.

“The biggest misconception that entrepreneurs have is that they need a whole bunch of start-up money to do it. All you really need is a laptop, a good cell phone and a few months worth of paychecks saved up, depending on the business you are starting.”

Participating in the CEO roundtable panel, President & CEO of the Houston Area Urban League Sylvia Brooks offered her life lessons for business success.

“It takes a commitment to be successful in business, not only to your business, but you have to be committed to your family. You have to work out a balance,” Brooks said.

Brooks shared with the audience how her husband Errol enjoyed a challenging career as the director of human resources for a chemical company until their two older children became toddlers. He was concerned that his wife’s demanding career would take away from quality time with his children so he stepped down from his high visibility position and took a less demanding job as anemployment counselor.

“Everyone has to figure out a way to meet their personal and spiritual needs,” added Brooks. “Otherwise you will go crazy and start making a lot of mistakes.”

According to Joyner one of the biggest mistakes a prospective entrepreneur can make is believing that he is alone in pursuing his goal.

“In business [we are often] looking at what other leaders have achieved on their own and thinking we have to do it the same way on our own,” Joyner stated. “Many would-be publishers want to start their own magazine and grow it like John Johnson grew Ebony & Jet, or like Earl Graves grew BlackEnterprise. They grew their publications on their own out of necessity because they didn’t have an Internet, they didn’t have graduate degrees, and they didn't have the open society to foster their ideas. This generation can have all of the above, and most importantly, we have each other.”

Yates Graduate Joins CNN

Nationally syndicated news columnist and author Roland S. Martin can now add CNN correspondent to his lengthy list of accomplishments after signing a healthy contract with the world’s most respected news source.

Martin, who has appeared sporadically as a contributing correspondent to CNN since July 2002, has now secured a more prominent position. He will continue to appear as a guest commentator on a number of shows while the network develops other program concepts that will showcase his signature commentating style.

A political firestorm with an unwavering stance about current issues of the day that ignites debates across the country, Martin has secured a handsome contract with CNN that he said, “Is certainly enough to get my shoes shined on a regular basis.”

A Houston native and 1991 graduate of Jack S. Yates High School, Martin is a self-described multi-faceted journalist. He has served as Managing Editor of The Houston Defender and Executive Editor with The Chicago Defender, presented poignant opinions as a commentator for TV One Cable Network, shaped the editorial content for BlackAmericaWeb.com and currently hosts The Roland S. Martin show on WVON/1690AM in Chicago. Martin insisted that it is a necessity for today’s journalist to be well-versed in all avenues of mass communication.

Martin attributed some of his success to his high school communications program, which exposed him to the brilliance of mass media.

“That’s what I wanted to do from day one,” Martin affirmed. “When I went to Yates High School, we had our own television station, radio station and newspaper. So I’ve never wanted to do one medium. In fact, I’ve always wanted to do all of them.”

At 38 years old, Martin may not be the youngest CNN correspondent but he is certainly one of very few African Americans who have developed a strong presence on the network. His powerful viewpoint concerning politics, race and religion have earned him a place among the top journalists and commentators in the industry.

From humble beginnings as an intern at the Defender and later returning to the paper as managing editor before moving on to other cities to promote his message, Martin has spent the majority of his career as a member of the Black Press.

“I am someone who is committed to the craft of media,” Martin said. “I also understand the power of media. I’ve always said that it’s the most powerful institution in the world and it is important to have our voices, our perspective and being able to see the world through our lenses to give people a better insight of what’s going on.”

Martin’s keen insight into the world of politics and media are a direct result of his family’s love for debate and politics. His parents, Reginald and Emelda Martin, raised their five children to be confident, which to their amazement translated into an aggressive leadership style that blossomed once the children reached their teenage years.

“My husband lived and breathed the news,” recalled Martin’s mother Emelda.
“Roland said to his father one night, ‘What makes you think that one of us would not have gone into news and communications when that’s all we had at home?’”

It was Martin’s agent Marc Watts, a former political correspondent for CNN, who was one of the first to recognize the gift in Roland Martin. “He’s just a fantastic story teller,” Watts said. “He has a gift for asking probing, insightful questions and finding a way of making people comfortable with communicating with him and telling him stories that generate news. That’s what Roland’s gift is. That’s what they teach us in journalism school. Roland has perfected that and now he is going to get to showcase that on CNN.”

Watts, who is the founder of Signature Media Group, a talent agency that represents highly recognized journalists across the country, said five years ago no one believed that Martin, then a highly respected newspaper journalist, could ever break out of that mold.

But Watts disagreed.

“He is so intellectual and he has such a refreshing message that we felt we could capitalize on that if his message in the electronic medium were heard. He has a powerful pen and he was always a gifted writer. I recognized that Roland had a speaking style and a wit and a charisma that could be transformed on television. Nobody believed me. Even my fellow colleagues in the agent world asked ‘Why would you represent Roland Martin? He’s a newspaper guy.’ And I said, ‘You just watch Roland Martin in five years you won’t believe what’s he’s going to turn in to.’

“The television news landscape is so disproportionate of African-American males,” Watts continued. “Roland Martin going to CNN doesn’t solve the problem but it certainly makes it look better.”

Martin now resides in Chicago with his wife Jacquie and will make the weekly commute to New York to tape his shows.

Oldest Human Fossil Scheduled to Debut in Houston

The continent of Africa has produced the oldest human fossil, affectionately nicknamed ‘Lucy.’ Never seen by the general public in its homeland or abroad, Lucy is coming to Houston as part of an 11-city U.S. tour and many are asking why.

In 1974 archaeologists discovered several hundred bone fragments during an archaeological dig in the desert-like Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia. After reconstruction, archaeologists found that the fragments comprised 40 percent of a female skeleton that appeared to have lived nearly 3.2 million years ago.

The team of researchers and archaeologists named the fossil Lucy after a Beatles song that was played repeatedly throughout the evening as the team celebrated their groundbreaking discovery.

According to scientists, Lucy is the oldest human fossil known to man, which they say indicates that mankind originated from the continent of Africa. Leading anthropologists also claim that Lucy’s existence supports the theory of evolution after being classified as an upright walking hominid. A hominid is any member of the biological family Himinidae (the “great apes”), including humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans.

Lucy’s bones are kept in a vault at the Ethiopian Natural History Museum and many in the scientific community believe they should stay there. The exhibition, which will be hosted by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, “Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia” exhibition will begin August 31st and will mark the first time Lucy has ever left the continent of Africa.

Anthropologists and many museum curators believe that traveling with Lucy could damage or destroy the irreplaceable scientific find.

In a National Geographic article in November 2006, Rick Potts, director of the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program said, “Any risk of damage or removal from scientific study, especially when exact replicas of the fossils are indistinguishable for display purposes, seems unnecessary and in this particular case, not well conceived.”

But that didn’t deter Ethiopian President Girma Wolde-Giorgis from offering the United States a first-hand look at his country’s national treasure. President Wolde-Giorgis, who visited Houston recently to discuss the plans for the first-time exhibition, believes Lucy has great significance.

“[It is important] to know your heritage and your background [and] how long ago people existed on this planet, from the time of evolution, from homosapiens, homoerectus and all of those things. It's a very useful thing to know,” stated President Girma Wolde-Giorgis.
Lucy’s American tour is expected to attract tourists to Ethiopia.

“Ethiopia is not very well known in American parts of the world,” stated President Wolde-Giorgis. “We’d like America to know that we are a big country… a good country and what a historic country it is.”

As one hand washes the other, local leaders recognize that this exhibit not only sends a positive message about the prominence of Ethiopia, it also propels our city into the public eye of the nation.

“Lucy, hands down, is the King Tut of the anthropology world and ranks as one of the most significant discoveries to date,” said Jeff Moseley, President and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership. “The Houston Museum of Natural Science went up against some of the biggest names in the museum community, including the Smithsonian, and came out on top. Lucy’s first visit to America for exhibition is a prestigious accomplishment for the Houston arts community, and it’s a testament to the international nature and world-class leadership of this region.”

While museums across the country scramble to be included in this historic tour, the city of Houston has already secured their place as the front runner. Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis claimed that Houston was a natural choice for the first exhibition.

“What connects Houston to Ethiopia more than anything else is the late Congressman Mickey Leland,” Senator Ellis said of the late Texas congressman who was a champion for the hungry and poor. “Mickey Leland died in Ethiopia. We certainly used his name in order to secure this exhibit. A part of the impetus for doing this was the fact that Gezaghen Kebede the local consulate general lives here in Houston. It was his idea. He took over folks from the Mickey Leland Center with him along with Jew Don Boney during the early discussions about this. This discussion has been going on for five years. It’s been a long road to get this [exhibit].”
The courtship of this exchange could prove beneficial for both parties involved according to Senator Ellis.

“Lucy is going to be a major tourist attraction,” he said. “It’s going to be a major status coo for the Houston museum. People at the Smithsonian, in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles are all now saying, ‘Why Houston?’ We were told when we were there, it's because we Texans were bold enough to ask. Obviously there are security risks and costs associated with it. Insurance would have to be put in place. The federal government plays a role in making sure that Lucy comes and she is secured.”

In addition to meeting with the Governor and the Texas Senate, Ethiopian President Wolde-Giorgis also met with representatives from Maximus Coffee Group concerning increased trade opportunities between Ethiopia and the city of Houston.

“We’re here to represent the coffee industry here in Houston,” said Leo Vasquez, Executive Vice President of Maximus Coffee Group. “Ethiopia is a major coffee exporter with very high quality coffee. People wouldn’t normally know that. We’re trying to help get more business going here through the port of Houston and through our different warehouses and finished product plants…It’s all part of that circle of life that we are talking about; a small world bringing everything together.”

The world may seem smaller when we recognize the significant ties between Houston and Ethiopia. According to the Greater Houston Partnership, in 2005 trade between Houston and Ethiopia totaled $101.9 million. Waterborne trade with Ethiopia through the Port of Houston totaled $63.9 million in 2005. That’s more than a 600 percent increase from just $9.1 million in 2000.

Imports from Ethiopia to Houston totaled just $493,000, or less than one percent of the total. Coffee, tea and spices accounted for the bulk of imports. Cereals, animal and vegetable fats, oils and waxes accounted for the bulk of Houston’s exports to Ethiopia. In addition to increased opportunities for trade, the world’s stage is set for Houston to take the spotlight as this much anticipated historical discovery is made available to the general public for the first time.

Obama Courts Black Voters

Presidential candidate Barack Obama is making a concerted effort to cultivate a relationship with the Black community based on his recent actions. Obama conducted his first teleconference with members of the Black Press followed by his appearance in Selma, Alabama commemorating Bloody Sunday.

During his speech at Brown Chapel A.M.E. church, Obama connected with the African-American audience citing the historical legacy which allows him to run for president.

“It is because they marched that I got the kind of education I got, a law degree, a seat in the Illinois senate and ultimately in the United States senate. It is because they marched that I stand before you here today,” said Obama to the crowd.

Across the street, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton addressed another Alabama church congregation which indicated the importance both candidates place on attracting African-American voters. Earlier in the week, Obama took a major step in generating a stronger connection with the Black community by discussing with members of the Black Press a range of topics: targeting young voters, strengthening relationships between parents and the school system, introducing a bill protecting the voting process, re-igniting the Civil Rights movement and demanding relief efforts for rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

Despite serving eight years in the Illinois State Senate and two years in the United States Senate, Obama’s political resume has been heavily scrutinized. However, his charisma and propensity to unite America by identifying universal needs has propelled him in the polls, closing in on frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

During the conversation with the reporters and publishers of the Black Press, Obama expressed a need to continue the dialogue and made several poignant comments about key topics.

Attracting Young Voters
“The younger generation has to be engaged and brought into the process of deciding what it is that they care most about,” Obama said as he pledged to establish chapters of “Students for Barack Obama’ on every historically Black college campus in an effort to allow students to help shape their agenda. According to Obama, young constituents have expressed concerns about our foreign policy towards Africa and friction surrounding the war in Iraq as well as its huge budget. The freshman senator then pointed to the economic anxiety of the younger generation.

“What I have heard from talking to young people is that they are anxious about their economic futures. [They are concerned about] whether or not they are going to be able to afford a college education, whether or not they will be able to deal with the incredible crunch of student loans that many are dealing with,” stated Obama. “There are a lot of young people out there who don’t even go to college at all because they either hadn’t gotten a high school diploma or they had not been encouraged to go. To me, the most important thing that we have to work with the young people on is creating a career path for them and having the educational structures in place that will support those career paths [as well] as making sure they can finance college and making sure that they have access to career opportunities.”

Regulating Voting Procedures
After the hoopla in Florida and other states following recent elections, Black voters experienced an insurmountable number of incidents where they were turned away from the polls causing community concern. Obama indicated that he is taking a proactive role to assure that the votes of African-Americans are not tampered with and are counted.

“We have a bill right now that I introduced that we helped shape with the Civil Rights Organizations, the NAACP, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and other organizations that will make deceptive voting practices a felony,” stated Obama. “Many of you have reported on some of the nonsense that’s gone on during previous elections. Folks getting phone calls saying their polling place has been moved when it hasn’t been. Or pamphlets being circulated saying that if you’ve got a parking ticket and you try to vote you will be committing a crime. [All of these are] mechanisms to discourage people from voting. And what we basically say is, ‘that’s a felony and you will be fined or you will be jailed if you engage in that kind of… activity.’”

Re-Igniting the Civil Rights Movement
When asked about “Bloody Sunday” and its modern day significance, the Illinois Senator emphasized the need for today’s generation to continue the fight, drawing an analogy from the Bible. Citing economic equality as a major goal, Obama affirmed that African-Americans must take personal responsibility if change is going to occur.

“I think that we are the Joshua Generation,” Senator Obama asserted. “We are that next generation that is supposed to follow through on what Moses [set into place]. What that means is we have to keep on fighting for some of the hard won rights that are always in danger of being [taken away]. That means we have to make sure that our voting rights are protected. We have to have significant civil rights enforcement. We’ve had a civil rights division that has not been attentive to discrimination claims. [They] haven’t even tried to prosecute discrimination claims other than prosecuting universities for setting up affirmative action programs.”

Senator Obama added, “When I’m president that’s one thing I will promise is a serious enforcement of the anti-discrimination laws that are on the books. I think the most important thing that we have to do now is to achieve economic equality. That involves a combination of putting pressure on all our institutions, whether it’s the school system or the university system or corporate America, to be inclusive and to open up doors and opportunities to those who are locked out.”

Alluding to the importance of personal involvement, Senator Obama stated, “Internally we’ve got to make sure that we are applying ourselves in terms of striving for the kind of excellence that is necessary to compete in this new economy. Our schools need more money but we also need to make sure that our kids are working hard, turning off the TV and doing their homework [and] that we are meeting with their teachers and making sure that they have high standards in the schools where they are being taught. It’s a combination of our own efforts and pressure on the larger society to make sure that they are acting in a just and equitable way that I think ultimately is going to lead us to cross that bridge.”

Disaster aid for Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina
Recently the Senate debated the issue of whether to waive the Stafford Act related to Louisiana’s rebuilding efforts. The Stafford Act is a United States federal law designed to bring an orderly and systemic means of federal natural disaster assistance for state and local governments in carrying out their responsibilities to aid citizens. Obama was outraged at his colleague’s response to waive the act.

“We had those hearings just about two or three weeks ago, and I could not for the life of me understand why they would waive the Stafford Act rule for Manhattan, they would waive it for Florida after hurricane Andrew but they wouldn't waive it for the single biggest natural catastrophe in our history," stated Obama. “I’ve already started working with [United States Senator] Mary Landrieu to make sure that we have legislation that says it's time to waive that. We can't expect New Orleans to come up with a billion dollars to match what's needed to rebuild when they need that money to actually provide assistance to the folks on the ground.”

Targeting the Black Vote
Because Obama is racially mixed, concerns have been raised during the campaign about ‘his Blackness’. Supporters consider his candidacy as an indication of progress in race relations in this country. When The Defender asked, “Do you plan to aggressively target the Black vote and if so, have you developed a plan that will not polarize your white supporters?,” Obama responded confidently.

“We will absolutely target the African-American vote because I think that one of the promises of this campaign is to re-energize the African-American vote,” Obama said. “The best way I think to do it is to make sure we do an outreach to the outlets like the African American press. I will make sure that any rallies or political events that we do in any city targets a lot of our community.”

“In terms of issues, I think that a lot of the issues that we are going to be talking about are issues that everybody is concerned about. Everyone is concerned about a healthcare system that is broken,” continued Obama. “Everybody is concerned about Iraq. Everyone is concerned about an education system that is failing too many of our kids. But, one thing that I do anticipate spending more time on than maybe some other candidates is ‘What do we need in terms of an urban agenda?’ I think that we will be attentive to some of the voting rights issues and civil rights issues that have not been addressed over the last 6 years.”

Kuumba Dance Company Celebrates 25 Years

A group of more than 200 youngsters at Bellfort Academy are seated on the floor of their school’s multi- purpose room, squirming and giggling in anticipation of a Black History Month treat. The 4th and 5th graders are anxious to experience the zestful performance as African culture meets the down south Texas swagger.

The hollow ruminations of a beating drum silence the talkative pre-teens as the first member of the dance company emerges, his expression playful yet proud. The rest of the dance company soon follows, each clothed in authentic South African attire, their bodies pumping rhythmically to the beat of the drum master.

The Kuumba Dance Company (pronounced koo-oomba) will celebrate 25 years of outreach in the Houston community this March. In celebration of this momentous milestone, Founder and Artistic Director of the Kuumba Dance Company, Lindi Yeni, will host a gala on the 23rd of March at the Holiday Inn Southwest. The gala will honor community members and faithful supporters of the non-profit dance company.

The gala will feature South African Ambassador to the United States, Barbara Masekela as the keynote speaker. Masakela is the sister of legendary jazz musician, Hugh Masekela. Honorees will include Dikembe Mutombo of the Houston Rockets, Audrey Lawson, president Ameritus of the Ensemble Theater and Mr. and Mrs. John Broussard, faithful patrons of Kuumba house among others.

“Twenty-five years ago there really was a void in Houston,” Yeni recalled. “You could tell. No one cultivated and celebrated the African dance movement as an art. My hope was to bring that to the forefront.”

As the years rolled by Yeni watched in amazement as the city of Houston embraced her dance troupe, creating opportunities to perform more than 200 times a year, exposing many African Americans to their first true glimpse of African culture as well as allowing people from other ethnicities to taste the richness of the African people.

Adam Carman, a Caucasian, 27-year old musician, has played the drums with the Kuumba Dance Company for three years.
After a friend encouraged him to audition Carman admits he was a bit shook by the new and intense regimen but he soon developed an even more laudable drumming technique.

“We meet a lot of interesting people. We perform at a lot of charitable events. There is a lot of good that is done through my involvement with this company,” Carman said. “It’s an experience that expands the worldly consciousness. It reminds us that we should open up the lines of communication.”

For school performances such as the one at Bellfort Academy, located in Southeast Houston, where there is an even mixture of ethnic backgrounds, the Kuumba Dance Company tailors the show with a more educational tone. Group members teach the children about language, geography, social and cultural studies through a myriad of story-telling, dance, songs and physical activities.

“We are more than entertainers,” Yeni said proudly. “We are edu-tainers.”

If “edu-tainment” were an Olympic event, The Kuumba House would earn a gold medal. Year after year, Yeni and her dance troupe perform and educate students, and year after year, these students grow older and wiser in the world, but they never forget their Kuumba experience.

Crystal Johnson who has served as the Instructional Coordinator at Bellfort Academy for the past 3 years believes exposure to the Kuumba Dance Company will enhance the students in their personal development.

“Their services are worth so much to the children,” Johnson said. “I have been with this school for the past 3 years and I have invited them to perform every year.”

Debbie Ogabonnaya is a reserved Bellfort Academy 5th grader who wears a white zip down sweater over her blue uniform t-shirt.
“I remember seeing [the Kuumba Dance Company] in 2nd grade, in 4th grade and now in 5th grade,” Ogabonnaya said.

Ogabonnaya’s family is Nigerian which lends a more personal connection to the show. “When I see it, I feel kind of milky (shy) because they are showing a bunch of stuff that I’ve never said to anybody.”

Whether it’s expressed in English or Xhosa, the South African language demonstrated during the Kuumba performance, there is a universal language that speaks to all hearts once the drums begin to play.

“Twenty-five years ago I was more energetic and passionate about what I do,” Yeni reflected on her early days as a hopeful entrepreneur. “I saw myself as a pioneer in this field and a community worker. Twenty-five years later, I am a grandmother. I have slowed down. I see the fruit of my work and I marvel that we actually did accomplish what we set out to accomplish.”

Yeni who is originally from Tietermaritzburg, South Africa will embark on the next leg of her life journey when she voyages to South Africa in June of 2008 on a self professed “calling from God”. She will return to her native land to work with homeless children. She was apprehensive about answering her “call” but since accepting the burden on her heart as a message from God, she has made peace with her decision.

“Non-profits are created to solve a problem. When you have accomplished that, it’s time to step away and move on,” Yeni said. “The problem was that there was a void in African dancing in this city. Kuumba house has made its presence known, and it will continue.”

Automotive Technician, Global Imports BMW

Two weeks ago automotive technician Tommy Lawyer returned from an all expense paid vacation to Ireland, compliments of the corporate office of BMW. Lawyer was awarded the five-day-trip after being recognized as one of the top 10 automotive technicians in the country, according to BMW.

The ranking came as no surprise to the 35-year-old Atlanta Technical College graduate. He has excelled at his profession since he was a student in their Automotive Technology program. Lawyer credits his strong work ethic and solid educational background for his success. “Atlanta Tech laid a good foundation,” Lawyer says. “They kept on me and made sure I did all the schoolwork.”

Lawyer was a recipient of the HOPE scholarship and used it to finance a portion of his education at Atlanta Tech. During the two-year program, in addition to undergoing extensive training in mechanics, he was also required to study general education classes like mathematics, English and psychology.

As a child, Lawyer became fascinated with mechanics because his uncle fixed cars for a living. He says he chose Atlanta Tech because it was close to home and he knew it was a good place to be.

During his second year in the program, BMW’s Metro Step program came to the school and selected him to participate in their unique recruiting program. He spent six months alternating weeks between classes and hands-on training. Lawyer’s superior customer service skills earned him a place as a full time employee at the largest BMW dealership in the city.

Lawyer, who is originally from Savannah, Ga., has worked as a technician for Firestone and Goodyear and says that the opportunity to work for a major car dealership is one of the perks he received because he attended Atlanta Technical College.

An automotive technician who secures a position at a reputable dealership can earn more than $50,000 their first year out of school. Lawyer says, “The atmosphere is better [compared to the normal automotive shop]. We work in the air conditioning. The pay is better and the benefits are better.”

“When you wake up in the morning you don’t have to get mad that you have to go to work and that’s a good feeling,” Lawyer adds. “You get along with everyone that you work with and you know the product. If you know what you’re doing it’s good. You love what you’re doing because you know what you’re doing.” -te-erika patterson
